Level II Training:  QPR Suicide Screening Triage

QPR Suicide Triage training teaches participants how to probe for, and initially assess immediate risk factors for suicidal behaviours, and how to immediately enhance protective factors.  This more advanced training builds on the skill offered in Level I training, going beyond basic first-level screening.  The target audience of this course are school counsellors, nurses, help-line staff, social workers, case managers, clergy, police, correctional staff, probation officers, ambulance officers and other professionals in a position to have first contact with persons at risk for suicidal behaviours.  It is designed to train participants to make an initial assessment of risk for suicide and to "triage" the at-risk person to a professional for further assessment and and care.

This comprehensive 8-hour training programme can be delivered in both a face-to-face classroom setting or online.  It includes instruction on how to interview potentially suicidal persons and determine immediate risk of suicide, as well as how to effectively and immediately reduce the risk of suicide attempt. In practical language, the course teaches participants how and what to say, what questions to ask, and to initially assess the immediate risk of a suicide attempt as well has how to carry out and document an effective referral.

QPR Suicide Screening Triage Inventory

Suicide triage training includes instruction on the use of a structured interview to gather data that flows into a decision tree leading the interviewer to establish a crisis management plan or intervention.  The triage process results in a systematic and evidence-based process for determining level of risk in order to determine the level of intervention required.  The triage process will help in determining the need for, planning and carrying out a referral for further evaluation and or treatment.

This Level II training would be appropriate for those in a position to conduct a suicide risk assessment (e.g., social workers, schools counsellors, mental health nurses, alcohol and drug counsellors).
